Accelerate Filmmaker Project

Cultivating Tomorrow’s Filmmaking Leaders

Launched in 2017 by Accelerate TV, the Accelerate Filmmaker Project is a strategic initiative dedicated to nurturing emerging talent in Nigeria’s dynamic entertainment industry. Through training in storytelling, scriptwriting, and modern filmmaking techniques, the program equips aspiring filmmakers with the skills needed to become the next generation of industry leaders.

Collaboration with Industry Experts

The Accelerate Filmmaker Project draws on Accelerate TV’s strong industry connections, featuring mentorship and instruction from some of Nigeria’s most respected filmmaking professionals:

  • Kemi Adetiba: Acclaimed director of The Wedding Party and King of Boys, two of Nigeria’s highest-grossing films.
  • Joke Silva: Multi-award-winning actress and revered acting coach, often called the “Meryl Streep of Nigeria.”
  • Bibi Sasore: Award-winning director of Breath of Life and other celebrated works.
  • Lala Akindoju: Producer of The Black Book and Disney’s Iwaju.
  • Kunle Afolayan: Visionary filmmaker behind The Figurine and October 1st.

By learning directly from these industry leaders, participants gain invaluable insights and practical skills aligned with industry standards, empowering them to excel in the competitive world of filmmaking.

Growing Reach and Impact

Since its launch, the Accelerate Filmmaker Project has seen impressive growth, with the number of trainees expanding from 25 in its first year to 50 in 2024. This increase reflects the rising demand for quality filmmaking education in the creative sector.

The program features an intensive two-week course covering essential filmmaking skills, including lighting, makeup, film finance, marketing, and editing.

At the end of the program, participants pitch their short film ideas to an expert panel, and five projects are selected for production, in collaboration with their mentors and the Accelerate Studios team. These films are showcased at the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF), and participants also have the opportunity to win scholarships to renowned international film schools in the UK, Egypt, the US, and France.

Expanding Opportunities

The success of the Accelerate Filmmaker Project is evidenced by its alumni achievements. Several short films have garnered nominations and awards at esteemed ceremonies, such as the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA). Notably, Penance, directed by Michael “Amapsalmist” Akinrogunde, received the award for best short film in in 2018 and Bola ‘Enigma’ Akanbi for Thorn in 2020 reinforcing the project’s commitment to excellence.
